Rock Star of the Week - Isaac King
We’re launching a new RiverCity Rock Star Academy Student of the Week series! Every week, check back here for a profile of an awesome member of our community to learn more about who we are, what we do, and what we care about! We start with our drummer extraordinaire - ISAAC KING
When did you start playing music and why?
I started playing music around the age of two-ish. I could play drums okay by the age of four and wrote my first song a few years later. It helped a lot that I grew up surrounded by music - my dad has been playing guitar since he was a kid, and my older brother has been an influence on me musically since the beginning. So I guess you could say I kind of grew into it.
What is your favorite song you ever played?
I've had a lot of fun playing various songs at RiverCity Rock Star Academy. I don't know if I could pick a favorite song, but some of the songs I've enjoyed working on the most are 'Best Of You' (Foo Fighters), 'War Pigs' (Black Sabbath), 'Jesus Of Suburbia' (Green Day), 'Working Man' (Rush), and definitely 'Bohemian Rhapsody' (Queen). I get a lot more engaged in the music if the rest of the band is engaged also.
What do you like about RiverCity Rock Star Academy?
RCRSA is my favorite place to be in town, period. I've probably learned more about music from playing the songs there than I've learned anywhere else. It's a community of people who prop each other up and work together to play great music. Sure, we might have disagreements about certain tiny pieces of a song sometimes, but at the end of the day, we really are all friends in an inclusive environment doing something we all love.
What is your favorite band right now?
Favorite is always a tough word for me, but right now I'm hooked on a group called Tennyson. They're a brother/sister duo who make this genre that's basically the most expressive and organic type of electronic music you can think of. More in the traditional sense of the word "band", I'm a fan of The Decemberists, Radiohead, Elvis Costello and the Attractions, and recently I was introduced to Ween. Love The Who. Love The Clash. Love The Cure. In fact, I can't think of a band I don't like that doesn't have the title of "The blank", though I'm sure they exist. Haha.
What other music projects are you working on?
Since a couple years ago, I've been experimenting with an electronic music project of my own. It's called IkoGrande (bit.ly/ikogrande), because that was the stage name I came up with a million years ago, and I have a lot of fun with it, even if it takes me a while to get stuff finished. I put effort in, and I get progress out - just like with all the music I make.
