RiverCity Rock Star Academy Teacher
Guitar, Bass and Drums. I can sing too but for some reason people start laughing when I do that.
When did you start playing music and what was/is your influence for playing music?
I started playing music when I was 11 years old. I started on the trumpet in school. I picked up guitar a few months later and fell in love with it. I had a friend who also played guitar and we would always be competing to see who could be better. When I was 12 and after about 6 months of playing, I went into intermediate band in school. The other kids were definitely more experienced than me and would sometimes make fun of me when I soloed because I wasn’t very good. This motivated me to be better than they were, so I did.
I find it funny that my original motivation for playing music was competition and proving myself. However, once I joined the San Diego School of Rock (a music school in San Diego similar to RiverCity), music really became my life. Through that program I was able to really push myself, play with some amazing musicians, was able to go on tour multiple times, play some amazing venues, and make some lifelong friends.
I guess you could say my current influence for playing music is simply that it is the most fun thing to do. No matter what bad things may be happening in your life, if you play an awesome song with awesome people, it is the best feeling in the world.
What are your favorite song(s) you've helped direct at RiverCity?
‘Mouths Like Sidewinder Missiles’ by The Fall of Troy, ‘Ride the Lightning’ by Metallica, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ by Queen, and many others.
What do you like about RiverCity?
Too many things to name here. I love how all the teachers and students are like one big family. RiverCity is a creative haven where people who love music can come and have an awesome time. I am unbelievably thankful for all the opportunities RiverCity has brought me and for all of the experiences over the last few years. My goal is to grow this thing as big as possible and be the best rock music school in the country!
What are your favorite bands/artists right now?
Recently I have been listening to a lot of Thank You Scientist, Unite, DIV, and Galneryus.
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
Practice and have the tenacity and motivation to never give up. I have spent hours just practicing a few seconds worth of music. I think a lot of people give up quickly on trying to push themselves. Also, never become complacent, always try to get better than you are now and always try to play with people who are better than you to push you even more.
What’s something unique or funny about you?
You say “Doozy” on the microphone once at a show and it blows peoples’ minds.
What things do you do when you’re not at RiverCity?
I have been working fulltime as a Portfolio Manager at RTR services. My time has been split between that, RiverCity, hanging out with friends, and talking/video chatting with my girlfriend, Camille who is attending Vet School in Kansas. I keep pretty busy. In the next few months I hope to find/form a band and do some more recording.
