Play In A Band & Rock (Legends of Rock Ages 10-18) - Class Starts Saturday

Our Legends of Rock Program is a twelve-week session for beginning-advanced musicians ages 12-18 which focuses on influential groups in music history. Our Fall 2017 session will feature three ‘Monsters of Rock’: AC/DC, Black Sabbath, and Led Zeppelin! These quintessentially influential bands contributed much to blues, hard rock, metal, stadium rock, and more, and through learning songs by these staples of music, our students will be able to play with their peers in a fun and supportive environment which encourages teamwork, musicianship, and music appreciation. Twice during the twelve weeks, the Legends will have the opportunity to play onstage for their families and friends.

The Saturday morning band rehearsals are also accompanied by weekly lessons. Here, our students can hone in on basic music theory and fundamental skills in the instrument of their choice through focusing on chords, scales, notes, rhythm, riffs, rudiments and the likes. Be it guitar, drums, bass, piano, or voice; they can take these skills and apply them not only to the group, but to their own individual musical pursuits.

Through learning about these bands, their history, and the way they performed, our Legends will accrue essential knowledge regarding performance etiquette and equipment. They will be able to play and perform with other kids and teens their age while learning fundamental skills and practical knowledge regarding performing in a professional setting with their bandmates.

Rebecca McDade

Rebecca is a Scotland-born turned Oregon-native songwriter and folk musician. From a young age, Rebecca used music as a means of acclimating to the trans-national moves her family so often made; they may have jumped between countries often, but she could always find a home where there was music.

She spent much of her childhood performing in musical theatre. She initially took this up in Ireland and upon her arrival in Oregon in 2006, she became an active performer in Portland's theatre scene, eventually earning a Portland Area Musical Theatre Award (PAMTA) for Best Young Performer in 2008. She also has been performing with various choral groups from a young age.

However, writing and performing songs has always been a passion of hers. She picked up a guitar when she was seven years old and has been in love with it ever since. Now her specialty is in folk music. Rebecca has extensive performance experience both around Oregon and Scotland.  She has worked with Marv Ross and Gregg Williams of Quarterflashand was involved with a project featuring Peter Buck (R.E.M.), and Jenny Conlee and Nate Query (Decemberists). She thinks there is no better way to bring people together than with music and she is incredibly excited to be a part of the RiverCity team and share her passion with others who share it as well.

Rebecca is currently a senior at Oregon State University studying Psychology.
