Our Rockers music classes for ages 12-18 develop teen musicians through a unique combination of band rehearsal, private lessons, and live performances. Forty-nine years ago on August 15th-18th, 1969, over 600,00 people showed up at Max Yasgur dairy farm in rural New York for the improbable Woodstock Music and Art Fair. This concert would shape the world's view of youth culture, music, and society for generations to come. Woodstock's "three days of peace and music" showcased 32 of the top performers of the time from folk, pop, soul, and rock, all sharing one incredible stage. From Joan Baez, Sly & The Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Jefferson Airplane, The Who, Santana, The Band, Sweetwater, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin, and more! Our 2018 Fall Rockers Tuesday Session will be playing the music of Woodstock! If you love all types of music this is the show for you. Open to all skill levels ages 12-18. The Rockers program include a three-hour weekly rehearsal on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm, a weekly private 30-minute lesson, and two shows over a 12 week season! TEEN PROGRAMS (AGES 12-18)
Our 2018 Fall Rockers Session will feature the sounds of Indie Rock! Originally used to describe alternative rock, indie rock has grown to also include the sounds of punk, post-punk, grunge, emo, and guitar pop rock. Songs will be chosen from bands such as the Yo La Tengo, Pavement, The Pixies, Moldy Peaches, Arctic Monkeys, St. Vincent, Alvvays, Elliot Smith, Chvrches, the Smiths, Bleachers, The Shins, The Strokes, Death Cab for Cutie, Alt-J, Vampire Weekend, Arcade Fire, Grimes, The xx, Sylvan Esso, The Hives, Japanese Breakfast, Front Bottoms, The 1975, and more! Come rock with us! Rehearsals Saturdays 11:00-2:00 pm. Starts on September 8th.

Students in the Metal Mania class will learn and perform songs from all metal genres and will learn how to master the specific techniques commonly found in most types of metal music. With the help of professional instructors, they will assist the student with enhancing their skill level, knowledge, and aptitude for their given instrument(s) or voice in metal music. Open to intermediate and advanced students in guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. Metal Mania students will have the chance to learn and perform songs of some of the great metal bands from the 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00s, including Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, System of a Down, Gojira, Mastodon, and many other heavy hitters of the metal world. Rehearsals Saturdays 2:00-5:00 pm. Starts on September 8th.
The Royal Performance Group is an audition-only, skill and experience-based program for advanced students ages 14-20. Students of the Royals group will have a multitude of opportunities to perform at community and private events/parties, in addition to their performance showcases for family and friends. This program is designed to give students the experience of a real working band and further excel their confidence and passion for music. Auditions Monday, September 10th, Rehearsals Mondays 6:00-9:00 pm. Starts on September 8th.
ADULT PROGRAM (AGES 21+)
Our Renegade Rockers Program is for adult musicians ages 21 years of age and older of all musical abilities from first-time beginners to advanced musicians looking to play in a band once again. Salem Oregon's Rock Academy provides the most unique experience for music lovers and music learners! From beginning musicians to advanced shredders, we provide music instruction in guitar, bass, drums, piano, & vocals. Students learn fast and most of all have fun! Rehearsals Mondays 7:00-9:00 pm. Starts on September 10th.
KIDS PROGRAMS (AGES 5-12)
Our beginning rock band program the Young Rockers is for aspiring and beginning musicians ages 8-12 to experience the thrill of making music in a rock band. RiverCity Rock Star Academy’s combines weekly band rehearsals with a private lesson in an instrument of their choice — guitar, drums, bass, piano, and/or vocals! Young Rockers learn music fundamentals and learn how to work as a team with band members. Students learn how to play songs from the greatest popular and rock bands of the last 60 years such as The Beatles, Nirvana, Ramones, Green Day, and much more! Rehearsals Mondays 5:30-7:00 pm. Starts on September 10th.
Our Pop Rocks Program is geared towards young, aspiring and beginning music students ages 5 to 7. During the 6-week program, Pop Rock students will explore music in a comfortable, non-intimidating, creative, and expressive social atmosphere centered around enjoying contemporary pop and rock music of the last 60 years. Classes Thursdays 5:30-6:30 pm. Starts on September 13th.
PRIVATE & GROUP MUSIC LESSONS
In addition to our various music classes, we also provide private and group music lessons in guitar, bass, guitar, vocals, piano, violin, ukulele, and more! Always a free trial lesson! We are not just a rock school we teach and play all styles of music from classical, musical theater, opera, jazz, folk, singer-songwriter, music production, blues, and many more. When did you start playing music and why?
My dad signed me up for rock camp at RiverCity and at first, I wasn’t super pumped to attend, but then I walked in and met the super cool staff!
What is your favorite song you've ever played at RiverCity?
Two of my favorite songs that I’ve gotten to drum on are ‘England Belongs to Me’ by Cock Sparrer and ‘TNT’ by AC/DC.
What do you like about RiverCity?
I like the staff. They’re super funny!
What are your favorite bands/artists right now?
I don’t really have a favorite band, I just listen to a lot of different music.
What things do you like to do when you’re not at RiverCity?
I like to draw, play video games, hanging out with my friends, and playing with my cats and dogs!
Shout out to all of our RiverCity family that rocked Make Music Day - Salem! We want to thank all the teachers, students, parents, friends, and RiverCity family that made Make Music Day a success. It was a long day for many of us that started at 7:00 am and finished up at 1:00 am. Thanks to our interns Mackenzie Rolf and Hunter Winnen, as well as student volunteer John Watson in helping us set up early in the morning and assisting throughout the day and evening.

We start off June with three shows right out of the gate. On Friday, June 1st the RiverCity Royal's play at West Salem High School at 5:30 pm to start the annual Powder Puff Game. On Sunday, June 3rd our Mid-Season Show begins at 3:00 pm at the Half Penny featuring the Renegades, 90s Rockers, Emo vs. Pop Punk, and Metal Mania. Finally on Monday, June 4th at Wright Elementary School for Music In The Park at 6:00 pm.
Introducing Rockers for Spring Session starting the week of April 9th! Rockers will now include three programs - All About The 90’s on Tuesdays from 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM (ages 12-18, all skill levels), Emo vs. Pop Punk on Saturdays from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM (ages 12-18, all skill levels) and Metal Mania on Saturdays 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM (ages 12-18, intermediate to advanced skill levels).
