YOUNG ROCKERS

Our beginning rock band program the Young Rockers is for aspiring and beginning musicians ages 8-12 to experience the thrill of making music in a rock band. RiverCity Rock Star Academy combines weekly band rehearsals with a private lesson in an instrument of their choice — guitar, drums, bass, piano, and/or vocals! Young Rockers learn music fundamentals and learn how to work as a team with band members. Students learn how to play songs from the greatest popular and rock bands of the last 60 years such as The Beatles, Nirvana, Ramones, Green Day, and much more! Rehearsals Mondays 5:30-7:00 pm. Starts on September 10th.

When did you start playing music and what is your influence for playing music? My mom started me on the piano at age 7. She plays piano, organ and sings and was a member of a singing trio with two of her high school friends; they performed at all sorts of functions, and I loved listening to their beautiful harmonies. She currently sings in our church choir, as well as a community singing group called "Just for Fun Singers”. She has been the primary influence on my participation in music.

Tell us about your musical journey?
In addition to piano lessons, I played the clarinet in elementary school, played piano for the jazz band in middle school, and sang in choir for throughout all of high school. I'm lucky to have grown up in the Salem school district with an outstanding music program. I grew up solidly in the 80s -- started high school in 1980 and finished college in 1988 -- music from this decade is embedded in my soul. Scorpions, Cars, Pat Benatar, Heart, and Fleetwood Mac are some of my favorites.

As an adult, I got back into music several years ago by playing in the bell choir at my church and singing in the choir. One of my little boys (I have 3 -- twins who are 9, and an 8-year-old) started playing the piano a year ago and plays for many hours a day. I just happened upon RiverCity through a friend of a friend on Facebook and enrolled him in the summer camp last summer. He loved it and learned so much that I enrolled him in the Fall Young Rockers program. Seeing him have all this fun inspired me to join the Renegades!! My son, Christian, has now also joined Young Rockers. Those two hours with the Renegades each week are a salve to my hectic life; everything else fades away while I'm playing music with the talented and wonderful musicians at RiverCity.

What is your favorite song you've played at RiverCity?
I have a lot of fun playing keys on ‘Folsom Prison Blues’ by Johnny Cash.

What are your favorite bands or artists right now?
These days I'm a country girl -- so my favorite artists right now are Chris Stapleton, Maren Morris, Little Big Town, Zac Brown Band, Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, and Eric Church.

What is your ‘day job’ (besides a Rock Star at RiverCity)?
I have had the privilege of working in the book world since I graduated from Oregon State. I moved from Oregon to New York to join a marketing team at Bantam Doubleday Dell, then to San Diego to Harcourt Brace Jovanovich. From there I went to a book/video/music wholesaler called Baker & Taylor as a field sales person. I've been with the company for 18 years, and currently I'm in a small software division called collectionHQ where I work with new customers to implement the product. I'm lucky to do my job from my home, which works well with young kids. I travel on occasion; this particular division is based in Scotland, so I get to visit Glasgow every now and again!
